An amazing story written by Spencer Higham that portrays the life of one of the greatest scientist to ever lived. Stephen Hawking.
This man was brilliant despite his illness, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS). I always wondered what the letters ALS meant. Such a bad disease indeed. In simple terms this disease causes the death of neurons that control voluntary muscles. According to Wikipedia, ALS is characterized by stiff muscles, muscle twitching, and gradually worsening weakness due to muscles decreasing in size. This results in difficulty speaking, swallowing, and eventually breathing. He endured this for the last 54 years before his death today. The movie was incredible due to the story line that did not focus on the disease but rather it gave spotlight to the love Stephen and Jane Wilde had.
As the story goes, he was born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford, Oxfordshire. His siblings were Philippa, Mary and Edward adopted brother. This family was considered very intelligent and unconventional due to some activities that they used to do, like when having meals they would sit quietly and read something without endless chatter. Not exactly what families of today do. After years go by he lived with struggles like every other man and his reputation for brilliance and boldness was noticed when he publicly challenged the work of Fred Hoyle.
He was moved by Roger Penrose's theorem of spacetime singularity in the centre of black holes, Hawking applied the same thinking to the entire universe; and he wrote his thesis on this topic. Hawking's thesis was approved. This was a great time for this man, because it was a huge step into his career. There were other positive developments that came later due to his diligence and love for applied mathematics and theoretical physics, where he had specialized in general relativity and cosmology. Eddie Redmayne perfectly captured the character and personality of Stephen and portrayed it well to the audience. Those who have not had the pleasure of meeting this brilliant man, can see how he lived from this movie Theory of Everything.
There is nothing terrifying than that moment when fighting for your life and deep down you know the fight is real, no simulations no playbacks.
Mark tells Skip , “we gonna make it”,
then Skip says “she is not gonna let us out”.
At that moment all hope is shuttered when a huge wave bigger than anything rises in front of them. Moments before, there was a glimpse of hope, a sunlight to behold, a place to hold on to take them to the shore, but now the end is looking them right to their face.
The whimps of David "Sully" Sullivan shows that the end is here and there is nothing he can do. He accepts it with pain but it is what it is. Life ends here.
"Bobby we were so close"
"Hey it was a hell of a fight though"
Skip knows that all is finished and there is nothing up there, he gives bobby morale to leave the ship but the last look he gives bobby and goes back to sink with his ship is the look of knowing there is nothing up there.
There is this moment when everything goes silent, the waves are vast and no one can survive that. At this moment bobby accepts that it is all gone and there is no leaving this place.. this is where he dies. And he says the last prayer, the last message to his lovely wife.
"I don’t know if you can hear me but am talking to you… only love only love.. goodbye."Perfect Storm
